Cornell University Embraces Bitcoin in Academia

Cornell University's approval of a Bitcoin-focused degree program.
Cornell’s Academic Leap into Bitcoin Studies

Cornell University’s College of Arts & Sciences has taken a groundbreaking step by approving its first independent Bitcoin-focused study. Ella Hough, a Cornell student, is spearheading this academic endeavor, marking a significant foray into the study of Bitcoin within traditional higher education.

Ella Hough’s Interdisciplinary Bitcoin Major

Hough’s major, officially approved on January 11th, will cover a wide array of subjects, including Cognitive Science, Psychology, Philosophy, Information Science, Government, Economics, Anthropology, and History. This interdisciplinary curriculum is designed to delve into the various aspects of Bitcoin, from its cognitive and game theoretical components to its impact on societal structures and global adoption.

Preparing for an Honors Thesis

As part of her College Scholar Program, Hough is preparing to write and defend an honors thesis in May 2025. The thesis will focus on the worldwide adoption and revolutionary implications of Bitcoin, both as a network and an asset. Her work will be displayed in Klarman Hall and archived in the program’s permanent library.

Customizing Academic Credentials

One unique aspect of Hough’s academic journey is the customization of her diploma and transcript titles. She aims to have Bitcoin featured prominently in her official credentials, subject to approval from the Program Director. This choice reflects her dedication to exploring the significance of decentralized technology.

Establishing Cornell’s First Bitcoin Club

Beyond her academic pursuits, Hough has established Cornell’s first official Bitcoin club, joining the Generation Bitcoin’s Bitcoin Students Network. This initiative aligns with her commitment to study Bitcoin and supports the involvement of college and high school students in understanding and engaging with Bitcoin.

Encouraging Future Bitcoin Scholars

Hough’s pioneering work at Cornell underscores the importance of studying Bitcoin in academic institutions. Her efforts aim to inspire and empower future students to explore and build upon Bitcoin’s potential for creating a more inclusive and truthful world.

A New Era of Bitcoin Education

Cornell University’s endorsement of Ella Hough’s Bitcoin-focused degree highlights the growing relevance of Bitcoin in academia. As the cryptocurrency continues to influence the global financial landscape, Hough’s work paves the way for further academic exploration and understanding of Bitcoin’s transformative potential.
