Google Vids Rolls Out Beta Version to Select Users

Google Vids interface showcasing AI-powered video creation features integrated with Google Workspace

Technology giant Google has unveiled the beta version of its new generative AI-powered video creation tool, Google Vids. The tool is now available to select users of Google’s Workspace application suite for businesses.

Announcement and Integration

“It’s here: Start testing Google Vids today,” Google announced in an email. “Vids is an AI-powered video creation app designed for work and deeply integrated with the Workspace suite you use every day.” A Google community manager added, “We’re excited to bring Google Vids into Workspace Labs.”

Features and Capabilities

Google Vids utilizes Google’s Gemini AI and Vertex AI to generate customizable presentations based on user prompts. These presentations can include text, audio, and video. Initially, Google Vids will be available to “a select group of trusted testers” in Google Workspace Labs.

The tool leverages generative AI to create editable presentations that feature royalty-free stock videos, images, voices, and background music. Users can collaborate on shared projects, similar to other Google Workspace products.

Audio Features and Dialects

In an effort to enhance its audio features, Google Vids offers a variety of voice options, including energetic, friendly, and calm tones. Users can select from different dialects, such as American, British, and Australian English.

Background and Development

Google first announced the video presentation tool in April alongside other additions to its Gemini AI. In May, Google introduced several AI-powered features for its Workspace suite, most of which were consumer-facing. However, Google Vids is currently limited to business and enterprise accounts.

Recent Developments

Last month, Google released Gemini 1.5 Pro, an enhanced version of its flagship AI model, to developers. Along with Gemini 1.5 Pro, Google introduced its open-source large language model, Gemma 2, which offers faster responses and greater flexibility.

Competition and Market Impact

Google Vids is entering a competitive market where companies like Canva are also utilizing generative AI to help businesses and content creators produce visually appealing content. Canva launched its AI-powered Magic Studio in October.

Google’s launch of Google Vids marks a significant step in integrating AI-powered tools into its Workspace suite. By offering advanced video creation capabilities, Google aims to enhance productivity and creativity for business users.
